Delta State Police Command operatives have arrested 25-year-old security guard Godwin Mngumi over the alleged murder of retired Judge Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, with the suspect confessing to involving two others in the crime. The arrest occurred on Saturday, December 6, 2025, by the Homicide Section led by Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, who also recovered the late judge’s mobile phone from Mngumi. Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday, providing crucial details on the ongoing investigation.
According to Edafe, “On 6th December, 2025, Operatives of the homicide section of State CID, Delta State Police command acting on intelligence have arrested one Godwin Mngumi, aged 25 years, the security guard who allegedly murdered Justice Ifeoma Okogwu (Rtd) and the phone of the late, Rtd justice has also been recovered from him.” The suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation, stating “He confessed that he invited his friend, Nnaji Obalum, and one other suspect at large over to the house where they carried out the dastardly act together.” Nnaji Obalum has since been apprehended, while police continue a manhunt for the third accomplice still at large.
The murder of Justice Okogwu, discovered in her Asaba residence, has sent shockwaves through Delta State, marking a grim progression from initial reports in late November 2025 when her body was first found. Preliminary probes at that stage led to the arrest of another security guard, Lucky Matthew, for questioning, while Godwin Vanen—possibly linked to the now-confirmed Mngumi—was reported fleeing the scene. CP Abaniwonda, on behalf of the command, has condoled with the judge’s family and reaffirmed commitment to justice, urging the public to provide tips on the fugitive suspect.
This case underscores rising security concerns for retirees and judicial figures in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, with Edafe emphasizing the command’s resolve: “Nnaji Obalum has also been arrested while the manhunt for the third suspect is ongoing.” Investigations remain active, with authorities piecing together the motive behind the invasion of the retired judge’s home by individuals meant to protect her.
