Arthur Christopher Mbanefo, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished accountants, diplomats and elder statesmen, has died at the age of 95.
Mbanefo, a former Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations and a respected figure in the country’s professional and corporate sectors, passed away on Monday, according to reports.
Born on June 11, 1930, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Mbanefo was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Calabar, before travelling to the United Kingdom, where he qualified as a chartered accountant in the mid-1950s. He later returned to Nigeria and built a career that spanned more than five decades.
He began his professional journey at Akintola Williams & Company, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous accounting firm, where he worked from 1961 to 1986 and rose to become senior partner. After leaving the firm, he established a management consultancy, advising governments, businesses and international institutions on financial and corporate matters.
Mbanefo served as President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in 1978, during which time the institute’s secretariat was completed and formally opened in April 1979. He also represented ICAN on the governing boards of the International Federation of Accountants and the International Accounting Standards Committee.
Beyond accountancy, Mbanefo played a significant role in Nigeria’s corporate and public sectors, serving on the boards of major financial institutions and contributing to governance reforms during key periods of economic change. He was also a member of the Justice Ayo Irikefe Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the finances of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, where his financial expertise proved critical.
His commitment to education was reflected in his tenure as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at several leading universities, including the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. During these years, he was credited with strengthening academic standards, administrative discipline and institutional integrity.
In 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Mbanefo Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. During his tenure in New York, he represented Nigeria on key global issues, including peace, security, development and human rights, enhancing the country’s diplomatic presence on the international stage.
Mbanefo was widely honoured for his service. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He also received several national and international honours, including the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, and Brazil’s National Order of the Southern Cross.
In 2020, to mark his 90th birthday, Mbanefo donated the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre to the University of Lagos, underscoring his belief in education as a driver of national development.
Although details of his burial arrangements have yet to be announced, tributes continue to pour in, celebrating a life defined by professional excellence, public service, integrity and dedication to Nigeria and the global community
