A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, has stated that the recent U.S. military airstrikes in Sokoto State targeted the wrong location and had no impact on insurgents.
The strikes, conducted on Christmas night, aimed at terrorist hideouts in the state, caused panic among residents of Jabo community in Tambuwal Local Government Area, as captured in viral videos. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
Makama explained on X that the bombs fell on a farm in a relatively safe area with no known ISIS, ISWAP, or Boko Haram presence. He emphasized that Jabo has no history of terrorist activity, and the area, predominantly Muslim, is not associated with the claimed “Christian genocide” narrative.
He added that while U.S. intervention to combat terrorism is welcome, the choice of target in Sokoto was misguided. Makama noted that even other terrorist groups, such as JNIM (Lakurawa), do not operate in the northwest, and the region mainly faces bandit-related attacks.
Despite the targeting error, Makama stated that continued U.S. actions could send a strong message against terrorism in Nigeria.
