President John Dramani Mahama has maintained that the law must take its course in the case of a man known as Cyborg, who was arrested after allegedly firing a gun into the air during a meet-up with Nigerian music star Asake in Accra.
Cyborg was taken into custody on December 29 after a video circulated online showing him discharging a firearm in a celebratory manner while interacting with the musician.
During an encounter with President Mahama on December 30 at the Supercar Spectacle Sponsors Appreciation event in Accra, Asake appealed to the President for leniency on Cyborg’s behalf. The singer explained that the incident occurred in the heat of excitement and was not intended to cause harm.
Asake and members of his entourage greeted the President at the event, where the issue briefly came up in conversation. Recalling the incident, President Mahama asked if Cyborg was the individual who fired the weapon in Asake’s honour, a question that drew affirmative responses from those present.
“And he ended up in trouble,” the President remarked, prompting light laughter.
Despite acknowledging Asake’s apology and plea, President Mahama stressed that Ghana’s laws must be respected, stating firmly, “The law is the law.”
The Nigerian artiste is currently in Ghana following his performance at the AfroFuture Festival, where he was one of the headline acts.
Authorities have not yet announced the outcome of investigations into the firearm incident, but officials have reiterated that unlawful possession or discharge of firearms remains a serious offence under Ghanaian law.
