In what has been described as a remarkable gesture of mercy and thoughtful leadership, Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has given his approval to the release of 77 prisoners to coincide with the New Year celebrations on January 1, 2026. This initiative, according to the press statement by Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State is consequent upon
the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision speaks to his commitment to rehabilitative justice and the humane aspects of governance. He firmly believes that the justice system must balance accountability with compassion, especially for those who demonstrate genuine remorse and potential for reintegration into society.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, who chairs the Advisory Council, provided insights into the thorough process behind selecting the beneficiaries. In a statement, he noted, “In commemoration of the January 1st, 2026 New Year Day celebration, the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended a total of 77 convicts for the mercy of Mr. Governor.” The Council’s considerations included the nature of offenses, length of time served, conduct in custody, age, health conditions, and prospects for rehabilitation.
Dr. Ajulo commended the Governor’s decision, emphasizing that he reviewed each case personally to ensure fairness and humanity. The clemency measures include:
a). Outright release for 12 convicts showing exemplary conduct.
b). Commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment or fixed terms for 22 condemned inmates.
c) Reduced life sentences** to 25 years for 4 inmates.
d). Reduced life sentences to 20 years for 14 inmates.
e). Reduced life sentences to 15 years for 15 inmates.
f). Reduced life sentences** to 10 years for 6 inmates.
g). Commutation to lesser terms of imprisonment for 4 inmates.
“This compassionate gesture by His Excellency exemplifies profound mercy and forward-thinking leadership that prioritizes rehabilitation over mere punishment,” Dr. Ajulo stated. He further asserted that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions reflect an unwavering commitment to justice sector reforms, decongesting correctional facilities, and nurturing hope for redemption among those prepared to reform.
