On Sunday, January 4, 2026, the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) expressed profound shock and condemnation over two tragic events that have shaken communities across the northern region: the terrorist attack at Kasuwan Daji Market in Niger State’s Borgu Local Government Area and a deadly boat accident in Yobe State that claimed numerous lives.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, Chairman of the NSGF, described the assaults on innocent traders and civilians as “morally reprehensible” and urged a united regional response to insecurity that continues to disrupt lives and livelihoods.
According to the governors’ communique, suspected terrorists launched a brutal attack on the bustling Kasuwan Daji Market in the Demo community of Niger State, unleashing violence in broad daylight that left scores dead and several others abducted.
“Such senseless acts of terror targeting market women, traders and citizens going about their lawful activities are morally reprehensible,” Governor Yahaya said, condemning the perpetrators in unequivocal terms.
The forum’s statement went on to call on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible and ensure they face justice. It also extended deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government and people of Niger State, and all affected communities, while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the swift rescue of those still missing.
The governors pledged continued collaboration with federal and security authorities to strengthen the region’s security architecture and safeguard lives and livelihoods.
In addition to terrorism, the NSGF also mourned the victims of a separate but equally tragic incident in Yobe State where a passenger boat capsized on the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area as passengers returned from local commercial activities.
At least 25 people were killed and 14 more remain missing, with survivors being treated for injuries and search and rescue operations ongoing, according to reports from emergency response teams.
“This tragic boat mishap…is a painful reminder of the urgent need to prioritise safety in all forms of transportation,” Governor Yahaya said on behalf of the forum, urging relevant authorities to intensify search and rescue operations, ensure survivors receive immediate medical attention, and review and enforce safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The governors also called for unity, calm and compassion across northern communities in the face of such adversity, reaffirming their commitment to working with all relevant agencies to tackle insecurity, strengthen emergency response systems, and support those affected by these tragic incidents.
