Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, joined demonstrators at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, as protests over the Senate’s refusal to mandate electronic transmission of election results entered a second day.
The demonstrations began on Monday, led by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Amaechi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) like Obi, called on Nigerians to actively resist the Senate’s decision and urged opposition parties to participate.
He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) opposes electronic transmission because it fears losing elections. “Opposition parties — PDP, ADC, everybody — should come out to protest against the attempt of one party,” Amaechi said, adding that even if Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Bola Tinubu ignore the demonstrations, protests would continue.
Amaechi also criticized current living conditions and alleged increased corruption under the Tinubu administration, contrasting it with the Buhari era. When asked about Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential election, he replied, “Let’s wait and see… the will of the people must prevail.”
