Tragedy struck a mining community in Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Wednesday as at least 30 miners reportedly lost their lives following suspected carbon monoxide inhalation during underground operations.
Reports from eyewitnesses indicated that the victims, largely young men aged between 20 and 35, collapsed while carrying out routine work inside the mining tunnels.
About 25 other workers who survived the incident were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby primary healthcare centre, with some listed in critical condition.
A miner in the area, Haruna Safiyanu, explained that the incident was believed to have been caused by the build-up of toxic fumes in inadequately ventilated shafts, exposing workers to hazardous gases.
According to him, panic broke out when several miners suddenly became unconscious while working underground, prompting an emergency response from colleagues and site officials.
Rescue personnel, alongside workers at the mining location, reportedly secured the site and evacuated affected miners for urgent medical care.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, as efforts continue to prevent future occurrences at the mining site.
