The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has confirmed the existence of a plot to arrest its chieftain and former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
It described the alleged scheme as a calculated attempt to silence opposition voices ahead of future elections.
The state’s ADC Publicity Secretary, Chief Luckyman Egila, made this disclosure on Friday while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, warning that no such threat could be dismissed given the current political climate in the country.
Egila, pointed to the recent arrest of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, by the Department of State Services (DSS) as evidence that the Federal Government was systematically targeting opposition figures.
“You call it a rumour, but this is politics and we cannot write it off. Remember that El-Rufai was arrested by DSS and they seem to be after everybody that they see as opposition,” he said.
The ADC spokesman was emphatic that his party, which he described as the foremost opposition platform in Nigeria, had become a prime target of those determined to cling to power at all costs.
“The African Democratic Congress is the main opposition political party that is out to unseat the ruling party. We cannot write it off that there is no plot. They are actually out to arrest whoever is capable of opposing or defeating them,” Egila stated bluntly.
While maintaining that the ADC remained a law-abiding organisation, Egila disclosed that the party was yet to receive any formal notification regarding a possible arrest of Amaechi, even as it continued to monitor developments with utmost vigilance.
