The Confederation of African Football has announced a new date for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, shifting the tournament from its earlier March schedule to July.
The continental football body disclosed on Thursday that the championship, which will feature 16 national teams including the Nigeria women’s national football team, will now be staged between July 25 and August 16, 2026. The organisation, however, did not give further clarification regarding the host nation in its announcement.
The tournament had earlier been awarded to Morocco and was initially fixed to hold from March 17 to April 3, 2026 before the latest adjustment by the African football governing body.
In a statement shared on its official media platform, CAF said the change in schedule followed consultations with its partners, including FIFA, as well as other key stakeholders.
The statement read, “In October 2024, the Confédération Africaine de Football granted Morocco the right to host the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 and the competition was scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
“Following discussions between CAF, FIFA and other stakeholders, the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 have now been moved to July 25 to August 16, 2026, to ensure the successful organisation of the tournament due to certain unforeseen circumstances.
“Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are ongoing and all parties involved remain confident that the competition will be successfully delivered.”
