Two teenagers have lost their lives after falling into a pond while allegedly trying to evade suspected phone thieves in Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
According to Abdullahi, the incident occurred around 4:04 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, along Ring Road, Kureken Sani, in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.
He explained that the agency’s Emergency Control Room received a distress call from a resident, Muhd Abba, who reported the incident.
Following the alert, a rescue team from the fire service headquarters was immediately dispatched to the scene.
On arrival, firefighters discovered that two youths, both aged 18 and identified as Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into a pond.
The victims were pulled out of the water unconscious and were later pronounced dead.
Their bodies were subsequently released to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, who resides in the Unguwa Uku area of the state.
The fire service noted that preliminary information indicated the teenagers accidentally plunged into the pond while attempting to escape from individuals suspected to be phone snatchers who were chasing them.
Abdullahi explained that the youths ran toward the area in an effort to avoid being attacked but ended up falling into the water.
Meanwhile, the fire service also reported rescuing a man who accidentally fell into a well in Kano Municipal.
The agency said it received an emergency call at about 7:12 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026, from Abdullahi Aminu, who alerted authorities that someone had fallen into a well at Durumin Zungura near Assahabul Khahafi.
A rescue team was immediately mobilised to the location, where they found a man identified as Shitu Balarabe, about 40 years old, trapped inside the well.
The firefighters successfully brought him out alive and handed him over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, a resident of Durumin Zungura in Kano City.
The fire service extended its sympathy to the bereaved family and urged residents to take necessary precautions to prevent similar occurrences.
It also advised the public to ensure that open water sources are properly secured and that wells are fitted with protective barriers or covers to prevent people or animals from falling in.
