The Lagos State Government has initiated an inquiry into the reported death of a Lagos-based socialite identified on social media as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure at a medical facility in the state.
The investigation is being handled by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, following widespread online reports claiming the woman suffered complications during or shortly after the cosmetic operation.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Abiola Idowu, said officials had commenced a detailed and transparent probe to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Idowu noted that early information available to the agency suggested the clinic where the procedure allegedly took place is duly registered with the regulatory body.
She stressed, however, that registration does not prevent the facility from being subjected to regulatory review, particularly when issues concerning patient safety arise.
She explained that as the agency responsible for regulating healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that medical establishments comply with approved operational standards, professional practices and safety protocols designed to protect patients.
According to her, cosmetic and aesthetic procedures carried out in the state must meet strict regulatory conditions, including adequate medical infrastructure, qualified practitioners, infection control measures, proper patient consent, safe administration of anaesthesia and the availability of emergency response systems.
Idowu added that the ongoing investigation would involve evaluating the clinic’s adherence to established standards, confirming the credentials of the medical personnel involved in the procedure and reviewing the care provided to the patient before, during and after the surgery.
She reiterated the state government’s resolve to safeguard residents through stronger regulatory enforcement, continuous supervision of healthcare facilities and strict compliance with established healthcare standards.
The agency also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified reports while the investigation is ongoing.
