President Bola Tinubu was on Wednesday accorded a ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle as he began an official state visit to the United Kingdom.
The Nigerian leader was hosted by King Charles III, in what officials described as the first state visit to Britain by a Nigerian president in nearly four decades.
Tinubu arrived with his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, and both were honoured with a 42-gun salute fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery during the reception.
Prior to meeting the monarch, the couple were welcomed by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales.
The visit, scheduled to last two days, will feature a number of engagements hosted by King Charles at the royal residence.
Activities planned include the presentation of gifts and a viewing of Nigerian-related artefacts preserved in the Royal Collection.
A state banquet will also be held at St George’s Hall where both King Charles and President Tinubu are expected to deliver remarks before invited dignitaries and guests with links to Nigeria.
However, the customary luncheon with the monarch will not take place as Tinubu is observing the Ramadan fast.
During the visit, the Nigerian president and his wife will also lay a wreath at the tomb of Elizabeth II inside St George’s Chapel and engage organisations promoting interfaith dialogue.
