The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Sanusi, has revealed that police detention facilities within the command have been upgraded with air conditioning units to promote the welfare of suspects.
Sanusi disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Abuja, noting that individuals in custody must be treated with respect and dignity.
He explained that the initiative forms part of measures aimed at strengthening human rights compliance within the command, stressing that suspects remain innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
According to him, providing a more comfortable environment for detainees reflects a commitment to professionalism and ethical policing.
“Ensuring respect for human rights is a priority for me. That is why I have taken steps to make our cells more habitable, including installing air conditioners,” he said.
The police chief further stated that the improved conditions have had a positive impact on detainees, many of whom reportedly express appreciation after regaining their freedom.
He reiterated that arrest should not be mistaken for conviction, adding that only the judiciary has the power to determine a suspect’s fate.
Sanusi also assured that efforts would be sustained to further enhance detention conditions, expressing optimism that better treatment of suspects would help build trust and improve public perception of the police.
