Lagos police arrest gang impersonating security operatives to steal from estates

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended three suspects linked to a criminal gang that allegedly used counterfeit security uniforms and imitation firearms to gain access to residential estates and steal or damage vehicles across the state.

The suspects 27-year-old Obinna Okeke, 38-year-old Emmanuel Anyanwu, and 31-year-old Joshua Nkemdirim were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday during a targeted operation by detectives.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, explained that the group disguised themselves as estate security personnel and used a modified Mercedes car jack fashioned to resemble a gun to intimidate residents and gain entry into gated communities.

“The suspects have used this tactic to access estates and vandalise vehicles including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz SUVs, and other high-value cars,” the statement said.

Police noted that the gang focused on stealing car brain boxes, wiring, side mirrors, control devices, and other costly components.

The arrested men have admitted their involvement and are cooperating with detectives to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.

Recovered items include stolen brain boxes and the modified car jack used to simulate a firearm.

CP Jimoh cautioned estate managers and residents to be vigilant, particularly when individuals claiming to be security operatives attempt to enter residential compounds.

He advised that identities be verified through the Divisional Police Officer before granting access and that suspicious persons be reported immediately to the nearest police station.

Residents were also urged to make use of the command’s emergency contact lines for prompt intervention.

The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
