There was widespread anger in Special Site, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, after residents uncovered the remains of aborted twins abandoned at a refuse dump.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved male and female foetuses estimated to be about five months old, found inside a polythene bag behind the home of a commercial driver, Enman Danladi.
Sources in the area said the shocking discovery was made by a farmer who spotted a dog rummaging through a suspicious bag at the dumpsite, with flies hovering around it.
Speaking on the development, Danladi said the farmer quickly drew his attention to the scene after opening the bag.
“I had just returned home when the man came to inform me about what he had seen at the refuse dump behind my house,” he said.
“He said he noticed a dog sniffing a polythene bag and tried to chase it away. When he checked the bag, he found the remains and immediately reported to me.”
Danladi added that he alerted other residents, who gathered at the scene before the foetuses were eventually buried.
The discovery triggered grief and condemnation across the community, as residents described the act as cruel and inconsistent with their cultural values.
One of the residents, Joshua Lamba, faulted the act, describing it as a gross violation of humanity.
“This is a terrible act. It is not something our community is known for. Taking a life in this manner is completely unacceptable,” he said.
Another resident, Philip Jatau, said the incident came as a shock to many, noting that it left several people deeply emotional.
“It is difficult to understand how such could happen. A woman in the area who has long awaited a child was seen weeping over the incident,” he said.
Residents have urged relevant authorities to launch a full investigation into the matter and ensure that those behind the act are identified and prosecuted.
Attempts to get confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command as of Thursday were unsuccessful.
