Nigerians in India have raised concerns over alleged harassment, discrimination, and strict visa conditions imposed by authorities.
Several students and residents claim they face racial profiling, police brutality, and frequent arrests linked to visa issues. They also complained about high visa renewal fees and shorter renewal periods compared to other African nationals.
The situation has sparked protests by the National Association of Nigerian Students, which called for urgent diplomatic intervention from the Nigerian government. The group warned it could escalate actions if authorities fail to respond.
Reports indicate that some Nigerians have been denied housing, had businesses shut down, or faced deportation due to immigration challenges. Others allege that law enforcement agencies unfairly target Nigerians, sometimes associating them with criminal activities.
However, officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission said they have not received formal complaints and noted that Nigeria cannot dictate another country’s visa policies, except through diplomatic reciprocity.
Former diplomats have urged the Nigerian government to engage Indian authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure the safety and fair treatment of Nigerians abroad, while also advising citizens to obey local laws.
