President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised opposition parties over their stance on Nigeria’s electoral law, accusing them of distorting the Electoral Act 2026 for political gain.
Speaking at the APC national convention in Abuja, Tinubu said repeated attacks on the law were misleading and harmful to democratic progress. He stressed that the Electoral Act was the product of due legislative process, including public hearings and approval by the National Assembly.
According to him, portraying the law as anti-democratic ignores the transparency involved in its passage and could erode public confidence in the electoral system.
The President also dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress is pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state, insisting that opposition voices remain vital for accountability and good governance.
He maintained that while criticism is welcome, it must be constructive rather than aimed at misrepresenting facts for political advantage.
