The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, is set to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside his supporters on Thursday, in a move that signals deepening cracks within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mohammed made this known while hosting top ADC officials at the Government House in Bauchi, including Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The visit, according to him, is part of ongoing consultations ahead of a final political decision.
The planned defection follows months of internal turmoil within the PDP, which intensified after a disputed convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 by a faction led by Kabiru Turaki.
Describing the situation within the PDP as “very serious,” Mohammed said all reconciliation efforts have failed despite setting up committees at both national and state levels. He revealed that alternative political alignments, including possible engagement with the All Progressives Congress (APC), were explored but proved unsuccessful.
According to the governor, the ADC has emerged as the most viable option. He disclosed that David Mark, the party’s national chairman, extended an invitation to him and his political allies after a series of consultations.
Mohammed noted that while the ADC appears to be the preferred destination, consultations are still ongoing to ensure inclusivity and alignment with stakeholders across both state and national levels.
“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked,” he said, adding that a final decision will be communicated after a crucial meeting in Abuja.
He further emphasised that political success ultimately depends on voter support rather than party structures alone, expressing confidence in his political strength regardless of the platform he chooses.
If finalised, the defection could significantly reshape the opposition landscape in Nigeria, especially in the North, and further weaken the PDP ahead of future elections.
