There was panic and grief in the Bukuru Lowcost area of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Tuesday after the body of an unidentified woman was found in a river.
According to sources, the discovery was made by residents, who quickly gathered at the riverbank in large numbers, expressing disbelief over the incident.
A video circulating on social media showed the moment locals pulled the lifeless body from the water, drawing reactions of anger and sorrow from onlookers.
One of the residents, Tina Gabriel, who spoke with PUNCH, suspected foul play, alleging that the victim might have been killed and her body dumped in the river by unknown persons.
“This is deeply troubling. It is shocking that anyone would take a life and abandon the body in such a manner. This is something we have never experienced here,” she said.
Another resident, who declined to be named, also condemned the development and urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“We cannot accept this. Whoever did this must be found and prosecuted,” he stated.
He further revealed that the police were notified immediately after the discovery, noting that officers later arrived at the scene and conveyed the body to a mortuary for further investigation.
“People gathered when the body was found, and the police were called. They came and took the corpse away,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, had yet to respond to enquiries on the incident.
The development comes days after a similar shocking occurrence in Plateau State, where residents of Special Site in Pankshin Local Government Area decried the discovery of aborted foetuses dumped in a polythene bag at a refuse site.
The remains, believed to be those of twins, reportedly sparked widespread condemnation among residents, who called for urgent intervention by relevant authorities.
