Fresh cracks have emerged within the African Democratic Congress following the announcement of a new faction that has rejected the authority of the coalition led by David Mark.
The faction, reportedly led by Don Norman Obinna, declared itself the legitimate National Executive Committee of the party and distanced its members from both the Mark-led leadership and another faction associated with Nafiu Bala.
Claims of legitimacy
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the group maintained that it had assumed responsibility for the party’s affairs pending the conduct of a national convention.
It argued that the tenure of former National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, had expired in August 2022, adding that subsequent developments surrounding his leadership were subject to legal disputes.
Disputes over party structure
The faction also challenged the status of Nafiu Bala, stating that he never occupied the position of National Vice Chairman within the party.
It further clarified that former ADC presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, remains a member of the party, contrary to speculations suggesting otherwise.
Interim leadership announced
To stabilise party operations, the group disclosed that it had constituted an interim leadership to oversee activities until a national convention is held.
The emergence of the new bloc adds another layer to the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, raising concerns about internal cohesion as political alignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
