The Federal Government on Sunday said Nigeria’s electricity generation increased from 3,951 megawatts to about 4,300MW between March 28 and April 10, signalling gradual recovery in the power sector.
The Ministry of Power, in a statement, attributed the improvement to enhanced gas supply and ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising electricity output across the country.
According to the ministry, the upward trend aligns with assurances earlier given by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who had pledged at a Power Sector Working Group meeting that supply would improve within two weeks.
It noted that gas supply to thermal power plants rose significantly within the period, increasing from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 mmscfd, a development it said directly boosted generation capacity.
The ministry added that mechanical availability remained strong, peaking at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability also improved from about 4,208MW to more than 4,694MW, reflecting better efficiency in converting available gas into electricity.
It stressed that the improvement highlights the critical role of sustained investments in the gas-to-power value chain, given Nigeria’s heavy dependence on thermal power generation.
The government assured Nigerians that ongoing interventions and sectoral reforms would continue to deliver measurable gains in electricity supply, in line with efforts to achieve a more stable and reliable power system.
Meanwhile, Adelabu has tasked the management of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency to boost its internally generated revenue and reduce reliance on government funding.
The minister gave the charge while receiving the agency’s Managing Director, Olusegun Adesayo, and Chairman, Ikechi Nwosu, urging them to prioritise operational efficiency and expand meter-testing centres nationwide.
