Youth members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have announced plans to stage protests at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa states under the hashtag #AmupitanMustGo.
The party’s national youth leader, Balarabe Rufai, disclosed this in a post on X, sharing details and flyers for the demonstrations tagged “Operation Occupy INEC.”
According to him, the Lagos protest is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at Yaba College of Technology, while the Ogun demonstration is set for 11 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) office in Abeokuta.
It remains unclear if similar actions have commenced in Jigawa.
Rufai noted that ADC youths had earlier staged a protest at the INEC office in Lagos, where they displayed placards demanding adherence to the rule of law and due process. He emphasized that the protests are aimed at ensuring accountability, not causing unrest.
“The demand is simple: restore integrity or step aside,” he said, calling for the immediate resignation of Joash Amupitan and the reinstatement of the David Mark-led leadership within the party.
The protests follow INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition of factions within the ADC, citing a court of appeal ruling that ordered the maintenance of the status quo amid the party’s leadership crisis.
Earlier this month, several opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye led a similar “Occupy INEC” protest in Abuja.
ADC supporters have accused INEC of bias, insisting that the commission must act fairly in handling the party’s internal disputes.
