The Federal Government has approved an upward review of allowances, welfare packages and retirement benefits for civil servants in a move aimed at improving their earnings and boosting morale.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this during a briefing in Abuja on Friday.
She said the review would impact workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure.
According to her, the adjustments were designed to cut across all grade levels, resulting in improved take-home pay for both junior and senior officers.
Walson-Jack noted that most allowances captured in the Public Service Rules had been reviewed to reflect current economic realities.
She added that one of the key changes was the approval of full Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending officially approved training programmes, regardless of whether travel was involved.
She explained that workers attending training within their place of posting would now be entitled to full DTA.
The Head of Service also announced the introduction of an enhanced exit package for retiring civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The scheme, which takes effect from January 1, 2026, provides for the payment of 100 per cent of a retiree’s full emoluments as a one-time exit benefit, in addition to their pension entitlements.
She said the initiative was part of efforts to ensure that public servants retire with dignity and adequate financial support.
Walson-Jack further confirmed the operationalisation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme, which is designed to provide financial protection for workers who suffer job-related injuries, disabilities or death.
The latest reforms come amid increasing calls from labour unions for improved welfare for public servants in the face of rising living costs.
The development also follows a previous salary adjustment approved by the Federal Government, which saw an increase of between 25 and 35 per cent across several consolidated salary structures in the public service.
