The Nigeria Union of Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory has suspended the ongoing strike by primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect.
The Chairman of the State Wing Executive Council, Abdullahi Shafa, announced the decision on Sunday at a press conference in Gwagwalada, stating that the action followed an emergency meeting to review the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Shafa explained that the minister approved a monthly funding package of N5bn to address teachers’ welfare and outstanding entitlements.
According to him, the arrangement includes the release of N2bn monthly from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue, alongside N3bn from the 10 per cent IGR allocation to Area Councils, to facilitate the payment of the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and other outstanding benefits owed to primary school teachers.
On promotion issues, he said the minister had pledged to engage relevant authorities to remove the vacancy requirement for teacher promotions and review the 2024 promotion exercise.
Following the development, the union directed all teachers in FCT public primary and secondary schools to resume work on Monday, April 27.
Shafa, however, warned against victimisation of any teacher who participated in the industrial action, adding that the union would reassess its position if the agreement reached with the FCT Administration was not implemented.
He commended members for their unity during the strike and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to improved welfare and working conditions for teachers in the territory.
