Students of Obafemi Awolowo University under the Great Ife Students’ Union have announced plans for a large-scale protest over unresolved welfare and campus-related issues.
The decision was reached during a congress held at Awo Café, where students unanimously agreed to stage what they described as a peaceful but firm demonstration to press home their demands.
According to the union’s resolution, the protest was scheduled to begin as early as 6:00am, with students expected to block major roads and entry gates leading into the university campus.
Union leaders were also mandated to coordinate the action and mobilise students across halls of residence to ensure strong participation.
Despite the planned shutdown, the Students’ Union stressed that the protest would remain non-violent and orderly, in line with the tradition of peaceful demonstrations by Great Ife students.
The planned action has raised concerns over possible disruption of movement and academic activities within Ile-Ife, especially if turnout is large.
As of the time of the report, the university management had not publicly responded to the students’ demands or announced measures to prevent the looming protest.
