Effurun killing: Only spirituality can explain officer’s action — Police PRO

The Delta State Police Command has described the killing of a suspect by one of its officers in Effurun as a deeply disturbing incident, saying it is difficult to rationalise the act.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the circumstances surrounding the shooting defy logical explanation, adding that only a “spiritual angle” could be used to describe the officer’s conduct.

Edafe stated this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, while reacting to the extrajudicial killing of a suspect by a police officer.

The incident involved an Assistant Superintendent of Police, identified as Nuhu Usman, who reportedly shot and killed a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Describing the development as tragic, the police spokesman said it remains one of the most difficult moments of his career in public relations.

“This is a very sad incident. In my years in public relations, this is one of the most difficult situations to explain, because there is no rational justification for what happened,” he said.

Edafe added that the Command was struggling to comprehend the officer’s action, stressing that it was completely at variance with professional standards expected of the police.

He further noted that while the Force does not attribute official misconduct to spiritual causes, the incident leaves room for speculation given its inexplicable nature.

“Police cannot officially attribute issues to spirituality, but honestly, that may be the only way some people might try to interpret what happened, because there is no clear explanation for his action,” he added.

The Command said investigations have commenced into the incident, while assuring that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken in line with established procedures.
