Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has criticised ex-Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, over his recent defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing him of evading internal party contests.
Obi, alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently exited the ADC for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), citing persistent leadership disputes and legal uncertainties within the party.
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, Melaye alleged that Obi’s political decisions were driven by a preference for less competitive environments, claiming he had consistently avoided primary elections throughout his career.
“He excused himself from a tough situation. If he cannot handle party challenges, how will he manage a country as complex as Nigeria?” Melaye said.
The former lawmaker further argued that Obi had benefited from what he described as “uncontested opportunities” in previous political outings, insisting that such a pattern raised questions about his readiness for future electoral battles.
Using a metaphor, Melaye said Obi “operates only in an air-conditioned kitchen,” suggesting he is uncomfortable with high-pressure political environments.
He also alleged that Obi’s move to the NDC was aimed at securing another “easy ticket,” while controversially describing the party as aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The development comes amid a wave of defections from the ADC to the NDC, following the realignment of opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
