The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 93,220 new voters have been registered in Edo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Obo Effanga, disclosed this during a press briefing in Benin City on Friday, where he also released details for the final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
According to him, the last phase of the registration will begin on May 11 across all 18 local government areas and will run until July 10. He added that INEC has deployed voter registration devices to each local government and published schedules showing registration centres across wards.
Effanga explained that the 93,220 figure was recorded during the first two phases of the exercise held between August 2025 and April 2026. However, he noted that the numbers are still subject to verification to remove duplicate or ineligible entries before they are added to the official voters’ register.
He also stated that Edo State currently has 2,629,025 registered voters following the 2024 governorship election.
The REC urged eligible citizens, especially those who have just turned 18, to take advantage of the ongoing exercise instead of waiting until deadlines approach.
INEC also clarified that only Nigerians aged 18 and above at the time of registration are eligible to vote.
Effanga further said that voters can process requests such as transfer of polling units, correction of personal details, and replacement of lost PVCs through INEC’s online portal.
He assured residents that new Permanent Voter Cards generated from the exercise will be ready before the 2027 elections.
He added that Edo’s registration figures are relatively lower compared to some other South-South states because the state had additional voter registration opportunities ahead of the 2024 governorship election.
