Tragedy struck the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on Saturday as a 100-level student, Favour Olaniyi of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was found dead close to his off-campus apartment in Akure, Ondo State.
The university confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday issued by its Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo.
Adebanjo said the matter was immediately escalated to the university authorities after the discovery, prompting a swift response from security operatives and the police.
According to him, police officers arrived at the scene shortly after they were alerted, while university medical personnel and security officials assisted in the evacuation of the body to a morgue.
“After the incident was brought to the attention of the university management, the university security apparatus immediately informed the police.
“Officers from the force were dispatched to the scene, while medical officials from the university and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue,” the statement read.
He added that the deceased student’s family had been formally informed of the development.
Adebanjo disclosed that the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, assuring that the institution was cooperating fully with relevant security agencies.
He further said the university had begun providing psychological support to students who may have been affected by the incident, particularly colleagues of the deceased.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time,” he stated.
The university spokesperson also reiterated FUTA’s commitment to student welfare, noting that counselling and guidance services remain available to support students dealing with emotional or personal challenges.
Meanwhile, police investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
