The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the outbound carriageway of Eko Bridge to allow for emergency safety inspections and repair works.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
According to him, the affected section covers the outbound lane from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa heading toward Lagos Island.
Osiyemi explained that the decision was necessitated by the need to conduct urgent structural assessments and maintenance works to ensure the safety of motorists and preserve the integrity of the bridge.
He advised motorists heading toward Lagos Island to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair period.
The commissioner, however, clarified that the inward carriageway leading into Lagos Island would remain open to traffic throughout the exercise.
“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists,” he stated.
He further assured residents that adequate traffic control measures had been put in place to minimise congestion and maintain smooth vehicular movement along diversion routes.
According to him, traffic management officials and security personnel would be deployed strategically around affected areas to direct motorists and ensure orderliness.
“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Osiyemi added.
The commissioner appealed to residents and road users to cooperate with authorities and exercise patience during the repair works, stressing that the intervention was necessary to guarantee public safety and protect critical transport infrastructure in the state.
