A governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party in Gombe State, Monica Yahaya, has said residents of the state would witness a new style of leadership if women are given the opportunity to govern.
Yahaya, 33, made the declaration on Tuesday after obtaining her nomination form at the PDP secretariat in Gombe ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The aspirant said her decision to join the race was inspired by years of involvement in community development and advocacy for rural women.
According to her, women and youths deserve stronger representation in governance, stressing that leadership should reflect inclusiveness and grassroots development.
“If opportunity is given, Gombe people will see a difference. When women are given the chance to lead, they will see the positive impact,” she said.
Yahaya added that women have continued to play major roles in society but remain underrepresented in politics and leadership positions.
She also pledged to prioritise youth empowerment and create opportunities that would reduce unemployment and social vices across the state.
The PDP aspirant expressed confidence that the party would resolve its internal challenges before the 2027 elections, adding that she was encouraged by the level of support she has received from women and youths.
She disclosed that female aspirants in the party were granted waivers on nomination forms, noting that only the expression of interest form was paid for.
Yahaya further promised to focus on women inclusion, youth welfare and improved access to basic amenities if elected governor.
Speaking on challenges facing residents, she identified water shortage as a major issue affecting communities in the state.
“We all know water is a serious problem in Gombe. Even people with money struggle to get clean water. I will work towards making water available for everyone,” she said.
The governorship hopeful also maintained that her years of engagement with women and youths at the grassroots level had prepared her for public office.
