Angry youths on Sunday staged a violent protest in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, setting part of the council secretariat ablaze over rising insecurity and repeated bandit attacks in the area.
The unrest reportedly began as a peaceful demonstration before it degenerated into chaos, with residents expressing frustration over the worsening security situation confronting communities in the local government.
Eyewitnesses said hundreds of young protesters stormed the streets of Gwarzo town, chanting solidarity songs and demanding urgent intervention from authorities to curb incessant attacks by armed bandits.
The protesters later marched to the local government secretariat, where tensions escalated after some demonstrators allegedly forced their way into sections of the premises.
A portion of the building was subsequently set on fire, sending thick smoke into the air and causing panic among residents and motorists around the area.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said frustration among youths had been building due to the recurring attacks and alleged lack of decisive action by security agencies.
“People are living in fear every day because of these attacks. Many believe the response from authorities has not been strong enough, and that is why the youths reacted angrily,” the source said.
Another resident appealed for calm, warning that destruction of public facilities would not solve the security challenges facing the area.
“We understand the anger and frustration in the community, but damaging government property is not the answer. What people want is stronger security action and lasting peace,” he said.
Security personnel were later deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Authorities were also said to have commenced investigations into the incident as efforts continued to calm tensions in the community.
