Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered a cache of military-grade ammunition concealed inside bags of cassava flakes, popularly known as garri, during a crackdown targeting illicit drug trafficking.
The agency also intercepted thousands of pills of tramadol concealed inside a keg filled with palm oil in a separate operation.
The development was disclosed on Sunday by the spokesman for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, in a statement shared via his X handle.
According to Babafemi, operatives of the anti-narcotics agency often encounter other dangerous items while carrying out searches for illegal drugs and concealed substances.
He said the latest discoveries highlight the evolving methods used by criminal elements to transport contraband and other security threats across the country.
“In the course of our work searching for illicit drug concealment, we also stumble on other items that constitute threats to national security,” the statement read.
Babafemi explained that officers discovered a large quantity of military-grade ammunition hidden inside sacks of garri during one of the operations.
He added that another team of operatives uncovered thousands of tramadol 225mg tablets concealed in a container of red oil.
The NDLEA spokesman noted that the discoveries underscore the growing sophistication of smuggling networks and the risks faced by operatives in the line of duty.
“The things we see in the line of duty,” he added.
