Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government to arrest controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, over alleged remarks linked to the country’s worsening security crisis.
Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday following the circulation of a viral video in which Gumi was heard speaking about Fulani herders and the need for coexistence.
In the video, the cleric reportedly stated that Fulani herdsmen “are part of us and we are part of them,” adding that Nigerians must learn to live with them.
Reacting to the development, Adeyanju accused the cleric of making statements capable of encouraging insecurity and sympathising with criminal elements operating across the country.
The activist lawyer argued that individuals perceived to be supporting or defending terrorists should be treated in the same manner as those directly involved in acts of terrorism.
“People like Gumi can only survive in a country without a government. Terrorist sympathisers are terrorists,” Adeyanju wrote on his Facebook page.
He further alleged that the cleric’s comments and actions were promoting terrorism in Nigeria and urged authorities to take immediate action against him.
“I call on the government to arrest him to serve as a deterrent to others,” he added.
The latest controversy comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity and persistent attacks by armed groups in several parts of the country.
