A faction of the African Democratic Congress led by its National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, has elected businessman and academic, Prof. Chris Uba, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The faction announced Uba’s emergence on Sunday in Abuja during the presentation of party flags to 29 governorship candidates drawn from the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The development comes days after another wing of the party produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential standard-bearer following a nationwide primary election.
Addressing party members at the event, Bala said the faction zoned its presidential ticket to the South in line with the principles of equity, fairness, inclusiveness and federal character.
According to him, three aspirants initially indicated interest in contesting for the ticket after purchasing the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms. They included Dr Bashir Sani, Prince Williams Charles and Prof. Chris Uba.
Bala explained that the party adopted the consensus option provided under the Electoral Act, leading to the withdrawal of two aspirants in support of Uba’s candidacy.
He said the decision was reached in the interest of party unity and in compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act that recognise consensus as a legitimate method for selecting candidates.
The factional chairman maintained that following the endorsement by the other aspirants, Uba was duly returned as the ADC’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 poll.
The faction also used the occasion to formally present flags to 29 governorship candidates, signalling its readiness to participate in the forthcoming general elections.
Bala expressed confidence that the candidates would strengthen the party’s presence across the country and advance its political objectives ahead of the 2027 contest.
