Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has threatened to mobilise protesters to occupy the Presidential Villa in Abuja if the abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State are not rescued.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Sowore called on President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria’s security chiefs to take immediate action to secure the release of the victims and other kidnapped persons across the country.
He warned that continued inaction by the authorities could trigger nationwide protests at Aso Rock this week.
The threat follows public outrage over the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when armed men attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and LA Primary School in Ogbomoso.
Reports indicate that at least 45 pupils and teachers were taken away by the attackers. The gunmen also killed an assistant head teacher and a commercial motorcyclist during the attack.
While in captivity, another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded, further heightening concerns about the safety of the remaining victims.
The incident has sparked protests by teachers, students, parents, and civil society organisations, who are demanding urgent intervention from security agencies and the federal government to secure the release of those still being held.
