The Federal Government has assured the Nigeria Police Force of timely release of approved operational funds as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and support electoral activities across the country.
The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, following a meeting between the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, in Abuja.
According to the statement, Ogunjimi reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring prompt funding for police operations amid rising security concerns nationwide.
“The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, has expressed the Federal Government’s readiness and commitment to ensure prompt release of approved funds to the Nigeria Police Force in order to strengthen its operations and tackle insecurity across the country,” the statement read.
Ogunjimi noted that the security challenges confronting the country required stronger institutional support for the police to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
He said the role of the police in addressing insecurity remained critical and deserved adequate financial backing to improve operational efficiency and professionalism.
The Accountant-General also linked the need for sustained funding to preparations for the forthcoming off-season governorship elections scheduled for June and August 2026.
According to him, security agencies would require significant support to ensure peaceful and credible electoral processes.
He further urged the police leadership to sustain engagement with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy to facilitate the release of outstanding funds owed to the force.
Ogunjimi warned that inadequate funding could negatively affect critical police operations and ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Disu, appealed for the immediate release of pending funds to support policing activities nationwide.
He stressed that adequate funding remained essential for the police to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibilities, especially ahead of the off-season elections.
Nigeria has continued to battle security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, communal clashes and attacks on critical infrastructure across different parts of the country.
