The Legal Observer gathered on Tuesday that the Governing Council of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti, FUOYE, led by Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, jointly put up a welcome back event to reinstate the embattled VC, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, despite his pending issues.
The suspended Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, who was earlier sanctioned over alleged sexual advances toward a married staff member, Engineer Adebayo Folashade, has now been welcomed back to the institution with pomp and security escort.
An insider hinted that the Council’s controversial decision to throw a lavish welcome of Professor Fasina have sparked outrage within the university community and beyond.
“Today, 14th October 2025, FUOYE Governing Council and University Management jointly organised a shameless and academically embarrassing ‘Security Guard of Honour’ to welcome back a suspended sexual offender (Fasina) to office,” the source lamented.
The insider further accused Senator Ndoma-Egba of fostering corruption and mismanagement within the institution, saying his tenure as Council Chairman had “completely turned the once shining Federal University Oye-Ekiti into a shadow of itself.”
“Ndoma-Egba has become a symbol of shame to the Federal Ministry of Education,” the source added, citing what they described as “unprecedented records of reckless looting and financial frivolity” under his leadership.
Professor Fasina was earlier suspended by the university’s Governing Council following allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of office and was directed to proceed on leave since his tenure had elapsed.
His return, greeted by celebrations and tight security, has raised serious questions about accountability and ethical standards within Nigeria’s higher education system.
Stakeholders, including staff unions, have reportedly petitioned the Federal Ministry of Education, demanding an independent probe into the management of FUOYE by both Ndoma-Egba and Fasina under the current Council.
On October 9, 2025, SaharaReporters reported that concerned staff of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) wrote a petition to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, calling for an urgent and thorough investigation into what they described as gross governance failure and deep-rooted financial mismanagement in the university.
The petitioners also demanded the immediate removal of the University Council Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), and the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina.
In the petition signed by Comrade Kamal Odunjo-Saka, which the Minister’s office officially acknowledged, the staff accused the duo of running FUOYE like a “private enterprise” with little regard for university statutes, financial regulations, and ethical governance standards.
They alleged that the alliance between Senator Ndoma-Egba and Prof. Fasina had crippled accountability structures and turned the once-promising institution into a haven for corruption, intimidation, and mismanagement.
According to the petitioners, the university is now plagued by widespread financial irregularities, including the fraudulent approval of funds, misappropriation of resources, inflated contracts, and diversion of internally generated revenue.
They alleged that decisions of the Governing Council are now routinely rushed through without proper deliberation, often in clear violation of due process and the university’s extant laws.
The petition further alleged that statutory officers who attempt to question or challenge the irregularities are victimised, sidelined, or summarily transferred, while staff unions are systematically suppressed to prevent internal resistance.
The staff warned that the institution’s credibility is fast deteriorating, noting that FUOYE, once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing federal universities, is now facing imminent collapse if urgent corrective action is not taken.
They expressed fear that the ongoing administrative rot could lead to loss of accreditation for some programmes, disruption of academic calendars, and possible industrial crises that may affect thousands of students.
The petitioners appealed to the Minister of Education to urgently intervene to protect the integrity of the Nigerian higher education system and restore transparency, accountability, and discipline in FUOYE’s management.
On April 15, 2025, SaharaReporters reported that the suspended Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Fasina, had refused to relinquish control to the newly appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shittu, despite a clear directive from the university’s Governing Council.
Fasina was suspended following allegations of sexual harassment made by a senior university official, Adebayo.
The Governing Council, in response to the serious nature of the allegation, directed him to proceed on his accumulated annual leave while appointing Prof. Shittu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor in the interim.
