The Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Nigeria, Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, has announced plans by First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) to commence operations in Lagos, while Etihad Airways is expected to begin flights to Abuja later this year.
Al-Shamsi disclosed this during a meeting with Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Abuja on Monday.
According to the envoy, the easing of visa restrictions for Nigerian travellers has significantly improved relations between both countries. He stated that visa rejections for Nigerians seeking to travel to the UAE have effectively ceased, resulting in a sharp increase in travel between the two nations.
The ambassador revealed that more than 15,000 Nigerians visited the UAE over the past year following the relaxation of visa requirements. He also noted that non-oil trade between Nigeria and the UAE rose from $4.3 billion in 2024 to $5 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach about $8 billion by 2027.
Al-Shamsi reaffirmed the UAE’s support for Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and terrorism, stressing that his country remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Speaking during the meeting, Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the progress made in resolving issues between both nations, particularly regarding visa policies. She commended the growing trade relationship and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to attracting investments from UAE sovereign wealth funds and private investors.
The minister highlighted the importance of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed by both countries, describing it as a key driver for increased trade, investment, and professional exchanges.
She also disclosed that Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was among the first foreign dignitaries to congratulate her following her appointment by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the gesture as evidence of the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UAE.
The development is expected to strengthen economic cooperation, boost foreign investment, and expand air connectivity between both countries.
