In the wake of circulating reports concerning an alleged assassination attempt on a naval officer during a heated face-off between security operatives attached to Minister Nyesom Wike and the police, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has categorically denied the claims. According to the reports, the pursuit began around 6:30 p.m. at the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa Expressway and continued to Gado Nasco Way.
The police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, provided clarification on Sunday, stating: “There was no assassination attempt on any naval personnel as has been widely speculated.” Spokesperson further explained that the situation resulted from a misunderstanding between police officers deployed to protect the minister and a team of navy personnel.Iringe-Koko said, “Both sides had an altercation… but no lives were threatened nor was there any attempt at assassination, as some reports have wrongly suggested.”
The FCT Commissioner of Police also weighed in, urging members of the public to disregard rumors and assuring citizens that the issue had been swiftly addressed at the scene.
A member of the Minister’s convoy, who requested anonymity, related to newsmen that, “It was just a disagreement about route management and convoy protocol. The officers resolved it professionally.”
The police command concluded by reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and lawful conduct among all security agencies operating within Rivers State. Iringe-Koko stressed, “The security of all law-abiding citizens and officials remains our utmost priority.”
As at press time, neither the Minister nor the naval authorities had issued a formal statement beyond the police’s categoric denial of any assassination attempt.
