The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video showing a uniformed officer being confronted and assaulted by a crowd over an allegation of stealing.
The video, which surfaced on Wednesday, shows the officer sitting on the ground surrounded by an angry mob. He appeared distressed as people shouted accusations at him while filming the incident on their phones. Although the crowd repeatedly accused him of theft, the exact details of the alleged offence were not clear at the time of reporting.
Another police officer later arrived at the scene and attempted to protect his colleague and calm the situation. The location appeared to be a busy area in Lagos, as commercial buses and tricycles were visible in the background.
Reacting to the footage, Lagos State Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the command had begun verifying what happened and identifying the officer seen in the video.
In a post on X, Adebisi wrote:
“The command has seen the viral video. We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”
The police again cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, noting that all allegations—whether against civilians or security officials—must be handled through proper legal procedures.
