Despite Nigeria’s defeat to Morocco in the highly anticipated semi-final clash, billionaire businessman and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfil his $500,000 pledge to the Super Eagles.
Rabiu made the announcement shortly after the match, emphasizing that the players deserved recognition for their courage, resilience, and commitment throughout the tournament.
“To our brave Super Eagles,” Rabiu said, “you fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud.”
He added that football, like life, does not always reward effort with victory but highlighted that the values shown by the team — unity, passion, and perseverance — are what truly matter.
“Sometimes our best efforts don’t bring the results we hope for, but the spirit and dedication you displayed are worthy of celebration,” he said. “As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey, I will still fulfil the $500,000 pledge in recognition of your hard work and the joy you’ve brought to our nation.”
Rabiu encouraged the players not to be discouraged by the loss, describing the experience as a stepping stone to future success on the continental and global stage.
“Keep your heads high, Super Eagles,” he said. “This experience will fuel even greater success next time. Nigeria is proud of you, and we believe in your future victories.”
Earlier, on January 10, 2026, Rabiu had announced a total pledge of up to $1.5 million in potential rewards to motivate the Super Eagles as they advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament. The pledge included:
$500,000 for winning the semi-final,
$1 million for winning the final,
Plus $50,000 for each goal scored in the semi-final, and
$100,000 for each goal scored in the final.
In his earlier congratulatory message after Nigeria’s victory over Algeria, Rabiu described the performance as a “brilliant victory that lifted the spirit of the nation.”
“Congratulations to our Super Eagles on a brilliant victory against Algeria,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “You’ve lifted the nation’s spirit, and we proudly cheer you on as you prepare for the next challenge.”
Despite the setback against Morocco, Rabiu’s decision to honour his $500,000 promise has earned him widespread praise for demonstrating sportsmanship, patriotism, and support for Nigerian football.
