Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), on Sunday welcomed a delegation of residents from Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA) to his Kano residence in a show of political solidarity amid recent turbulence within the party.
The visit, marked by a sizeable turnout of supporters, was described by Kwankwaso as a powerful demonstration of loyalty and shared conviction in the face of challenges confronting the party and the broader Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Addressing the delegation after the visit, Kwankwaso expressed deep appreciation for their support, “I reaffirmed my profound appreciation for their unwavering courage and determination. Despite the recent trials that have tested the faith and fortitude of many, they have chosen to stand firmly with us — not for personal gain, but for the collective progress and well-being of our people,” he said in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Kwankwaso further underscored that the visit reflected more than mere political allegiance. He said the residents’ loyalty was rooted in a commitment to the ideals and ethos that define Kwankwasiyya, a grassroots political philosophy he has championed across northern Nigeria.
“Together, we remain resolute in upholding and advancing the timeless ideals of Kwankwasiyya. The journey continues, and victory is assured by the grace of God and the will of the people,” the NNPP leader added, reiterating his confidence in the movement’s future.
The solidarity visit comes against a backdrop of significant political realignment within Kano State’s political landscape. On Friday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, once a close political ally of Kwankwaso, resigned from the NNPP along with 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight federal representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen, citing unresolved leadership disagreements and ongoing legal disputes within the party.
The mass resignation has sparked debate and tension among political actors and supporters, prompting public statements from both sides and warnings from the state government against inflammatory political rhetoric.
In the midst of these shifts, various party loyalists and public officials have reaffirmed their commitment to Kwankwaso and the NNPP. For instance, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, publicly pledged continued allegiance to the NNPP and its leadership following Governor Yusuf’s defection, emphasizing the party’s commitment to people-centered governance and democratic values.
