The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Ondo State, Hon. Afolabi Adesoji, has announced the commitment of the Lucky Ayedatiwa-led Ondo State government to rejuvenate the Idanre Hills for another tourism fiesta, slated for December 28th to 30th, 2025.
This announcement comes nine years after the festival was last held. The internationally acclaimed event was first introduced by Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s administration in 2009, aiming to harness the natural resources that contribute to the tourism potential of the Sunshine State.
The festival is celebrated for its marathon race and mountain hiking, with the name “Marebo,” meaning “do not fall down,” reflecting its adventurous spirit. Professional hikers from around the globe have flocked to the hilly community to demonstrate their skills during this cultural celebration.
The latest government statement aims to revitalize Ondo State’s economy, which has been dormant since 2016, particularly highlighting the economic impact of the legendary “Mare.”
The Idanre community, host to this tourist attraction, is optimistic that the upcoming festival will further elevate the Idanre Hills—already recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites—into the global spotlight as World Heritage Centre.

This year’s edition is scheduled to take place from the 28th to the 30th of December, marking a grand comeback for one of our state’s most cherished cultural celebrations.”
