The presidency has on Monday taken a swipe at Former President Goodluck Jonathan as well as his proteges over his subtle moves to contest the 2027 presidential election, stating that the decision is ill-advised, ill-timed and stands in contrast to the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)
In his riposte, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, hinted that the presidency would be left with no option than to invoke the jurisdiction of the courts to decide the legality or propriety of Jonathan’s gestapo moves– re-election bid.
“President Jonathan reserves the right to run if he wishes. But Jonathan will have his date in the court of the land. The jury will determine whether a man sworn in twice as president can seek a third term in office,” Onanuga said.
The presidential spokesman also berated the former president for depleting Nigeria’s foreign reserves, squandering Nigeria’s crude oil wealth and supervising the grandest looting spree in the history of the country while he held sway.
On the strength of these analysis, Onanuga emphatically declared that Nigerians are now wiser, insisting that they would rather stay with President Tinubu who has put the country on the path of both reforms and stabilised the economy rather return to the “terrible” Jonathan years.
“Jonathan and others are welcome to the 2027 race. But Nigerians who lived through the collapse he supervised will not allow him to wreck the economy again,” Onanuga declared.
