The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, has formally announced his permanent withdrawal from politics, declaring that his new role as a traditional ruler is now his sole commitment to public service.
The former Oyo State governor made this known on Tuesday while hosting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President Iyorcha Ayu, and other dignitaries at his palace in Ibadan.
Speaking during the visit, Oba Ladoja emphasized that his ascension to the throne marked the conclusion of his political career. “I am no more one of you. I am not a politician anymore. Welcome to my house,” he said. “Now that I am the Olubadan, I am no more interested in any other things than the Olubadan.”
Reflecting on his past political journey with Atiku and other leaders, the monarch recalled their shared history across different platforms. “We started from SDP, we were in exile together, we were in PDP together. When I wanted to create an identity, I went to Accord Party, which became a household name here. I know you politicians have a way of coming back,” he remarked.
Oba Ladoja further noted that his reign would be anchored on justice and fairness, values he said were central to the teachings of religious leaders. “All the religious leaders have said the only thing leaders can do is to promote justice and fairness. I will serve my people — Ibadan people, Oyo State, Africa, and the world at large. I will depend on your support and advice,” he affirmed.
The courtesy visit by Atiku, El-Rufai, Ayu, and others underscored the respect accorded to the Olubadan, who pledged to use his reign to foster unity and development across Ibadanland and beyond.
