Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has urged Nigerians to embrace hope and unity in the face of economic and security challenges, describing President Bola Tinubu’s reforms as the tough but necessary steps to reset the nation’s economy.
Speaking at the 65th Independence Day celebration held at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Wednesday, Soludo praised Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and stabilise the exchange rate, describing the measures as “bitter medicine for an economy long pampered and distorted.”
The former Central Bank governor said the anniversary was both a celebration of Nigeria’s resilience and a sober moment to reflect on the trials that have shaped its 65-year journey.
“Notwithstanding insecurity and economic strains, our greatest resource is our people. Invest in people, invest in the future,” Soludo said, noting that Nigeria’s GDP had climbed to 4.28 percent — its highest in three years — signalling potential for transformation if reforms are sustained.
He urged Nigerians to look back with hope rather than despair, stressing that a brighter future awaited the nation if citizens played their part in nation-building through patriotism, paying taxes, supporting reforms, and holding leaders accountable.
“With vision, hard work, and faith, no obstacle is insurmountable. Ndi Anambra and Nigerians should stand firm as a bright future awaits them,” he said.
The governor also framed Nigeria’s independence as “a symbol of hope, freedom, and the possibility of the black race,” urging citizens to safeguard the country’s unity through sacrifice and collective responsibility.
The event, attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, security chiefs, and other dignitaries, concluded with a parade and cultural displays showcasing Nigeria’s diversity.
