Pressure is building on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine after a fresh wave of Russian missile and drone attacks devastated several regions over the weekend.
Yuriy Boyechko, CEO of Hope For Ukraine, urged NATO to “close the sky” to halt Russia’s ongoing aerial bombardments, arguing that such a step would prevent further civilian casualties and allow humanitarian aid to safely reach front-line communities.
Condemning the weekend assault on western Ukraine—particularly the Lviv region—Boyechko said Europe must project strength whenever Russian drones or missiles breach allied airspace.
“NATO jets are scrambled, but no further action is taken,” he said, referring to Poland’s air defense posture. “All of the weapons Russia uses to strike Ukraine are unmanned drones and missiles. NATO should guard the sky over western Ukraine so air defenses can be redeployed to front-line areas under constant attack.”
On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of launching over 500 drones and 50 missiles across multiple regions, plunging parts of Zaporizhzhia into darkness.
According to Zelenskyy, the recovered debris from the strikes contained more than 100,000 components sourced from firms in China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed one civilian was killed in the southeastern region, while four others died in Lviv, near the Polish border.
Former U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and ex-Ambassador to NATO, Kurt Volker, told КИЇВ24 that Russia’s repeated provocations could force NATO to reconsider its 2022 decision against a no-fly zone.
Volker believes a growing number of member states may now support such an initiative to prevent further violations of allied airspace in countries like Estonia, Poland, and Romania.
