Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor made the declaration on Monday during a state-wide broadcast, describing the decision as a strategic move to ensure stronger collaboration between Enugu State and the Federal Government.
Governor Mbah said his administration has enjoyed “massive support” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that aligning with the central government would enable Enugu to benefit more from ongoing national development programmes.
“Our choice is driven by the desire to deepen cooperation with the Federal Government and secure greater developmental opportunities for our people. We have witnessed the President’s commitment to inclusive governance, and Enugu cannot afford to stand aside,” Mbah stated.
The defection was not limited to the governor alone. Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, and other key political figures in the state have also switched allegiance to the ruling APC.
Political observers view the move as a major shake-up in the South-East’s political landscape, potentially altering long-standing party dynamics in the region.
Reports also indicate that Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, may soon follow suit, with sources confirming that plans for his defection to the APC have reached an advanced stage.
Earlier this year, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, also joined the ruling party alongside their cabinets and political aides, in what analysts describe as a growing trend of realignment toward the APC across southern Nigeria.
Governor Mbah’s exit from the PDP marks another significant blow to the opposition party and strengthens the APC’s foothold in the South-East region.
